What wine sells now

Bottles sold, counted from the stock numbers sellers show on their own sites. Three places: the UK's biggest online wine seller, a national supermarket's wine shop and 22 independent merchants. Updated every morning.

This week's findings · sales from Sunday 11 October to Monday 12 October
01
The biggest online seller is filling glasses with Shiraz and Grenache.

11,845 bottles of Shiraz and Grenache reds at £10–15 left its stock, most of them at £13.49. Much of it goes out in mixed cases to its club members. Read it as what the biggest seller is putting on UK tables this month, not only what people picked.

02
New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is the white everywhere.

1,270 bottles at the online seller and 490 at the supermarket wine shop, where the three best sellers cost £11.25 to £12.50. At the independents it sells at £15.

03
Rosé is still selling in October.

It is the top style at the supermarket wine shop (687 bottles) and at the independents (185), most of it at £10–15. One independent sold 118 bottles of a £13 Provence rosé: a deal is working there.

04
The party fizz has started.

1,999 bottles of Prosecco at the online seller, nearly all at £10–15. At the supermarket wine shop, Crémant is the step up: 174 bottles at £15–20.

If you run a wine shop

What to do with it this week

  1. Put a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc at £15–18 by the till. The supermarket's best sellers stop at £12.50, so the next step up is yours.
  2. Answer the £13.49 Shiraz and Grenache blends with a £16–20 Rhône or Garnacha from a grower: the style people now know, with a better story.
  3. Put a Crémant next to the Champagne now, before party season. At £15–20 it is the step up from Prosecco.
  4. Keep a rosé at £12–15 where people can see it. It is still moving.

How we count

Many wine sellers show how many bottles they have left. We read those public numbers several times a day and add up every fall between two reads. Rises are restocks and are ignored. A single fall that is too big to be shoppers (a stock move, a trade order or a site reset) is left out: 12 this time.

The biggest online seller updates its stock overnight, and much of what leaves goes out in mixed cases to its club members. The supermarket wine shop is read twice a day. The 22 independents are shops across the UK whose sites show stock counts. Styles come from each seller's own grape and colour labels. Prices are each seller's shelf price.

We read only public pages, follow each site's robots.txt and never log in. Sellers are not named. Ziild is not affiliated with any of them.
