Wine email marketing for Christmas: a plan for UK merchants
Christmas is decided by delivery cut-offs, clean lists and a few automations set up in October. Here is a week-by-week plan for 2026, from list clean-up to New Year's Eve fizz.
In short
Work backwards from your courier's last delivery date. Clean your list in late October, launch gifting in early November, run Black Friday on 27 November and end your 'order by' emails before the cut-off.
Set up automated flows before the peak, keep every offer's main conditions in the email, and judge results on clicks and revenue, not opens.
Start with the deadlines, not the content
Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday. That compresses the last delivery week, so your plan starts at the end and works back.
Royal Mail's last recommended posting dates for 2026 are: 2nd Class Friday 18 December, Tracked 48 Saturday 19 December, 1st Class and Tracked 24 Monday 21 December, Special Delivery Guaranteed Wednesday 23 December. Royal Mail says these dates are subject to change.
Most wine merchants ship with couriers. Parcelforce express48 is listed for 21 December, and express24 and faster for 22 December. Time your 'last order' emails to your own courier's cut-off. Treat the Royal Mail dates as a guide.
Last year 2nd Class closed on 17 December. Don't copy last year's calendar without checking the dates.
Late October: clean the list and check you may email it
Before you send more, check who you are allowed to send to. Under PECR, the soft opt-in lets you email your own customers who bought from you, gave you their details and did not opt out, about similar products.
You must have offered a clear opt-out when you collected their details and in every message since. The soft opt-in does not cover prospects or bought-in lists.
The stakes went up this year. Provisions of the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 commenced on 5 February 2026. The ICO can now fine up to £17.5m or 4% of global turnover for PECR breaches. The old cap was £500,000. The ICO says it is still writing separate guidance on the higher fines.
This is a summary, not legal advice.
- Remove addresses with no lawful basis, such as old prospect lists.
- Check every template has a working unsubscribe link.
- Send a short re-permission email to lapsed subscribers before November.
The week-by-week plan for Christmas 2026
One theme per week keeps the list from tiring and makes each email easy to write. Adjust the December weeks to your courier.
- Week of 26 October: list clean-up and re-permission.
- Week of 2 November: launch gifting and corporate gifting. Corporate buyers order early.
- Weeks of 9 and 16 November: case offers and the Christmas range.
- Weeks of 23 and 30 November: Black Friday on 27 November, Cyber Monday on 30 November.
- Week of 7 December: gift guides and fine wine.
- Week of 14 December: the 'order by' sequence, ending before your courier's cut-off.
- 21 to 23 December: click-and-collect, shop opening hours and e-gift cards for late buyers.
- 28 to 31 December: sparkling wine for New Year's Eve, which falls on a Thursday.
- January: low and no-alcohol ranges, and the sale.
Write Christmas copy inside the CAP Code
Marketing emails are covered by CAP Code Section 18. Rule 18.1 says alcohol marketing must be socially responsible and must not encourage excessive drinking. Rule 18.3 says it must not imply alcohol is key to the success of a social event. Watch party-themed Christmas copy.
The rules apply to drinks above 0.5% ABV, and to alcohol-free products when the ad effectively promotes an alcoholic drink. That matters for January.
Offers need their conditions up front. In December 2024 the ASA upheld a complaint against Beer52 Ltd (Wine52) because welcome and referral emails offered a 'FREE case' while the main conditions sat only in the website terms. Put the main conditions of every Christmas offer in the email itself.
For January, note the ASA ruling against DrinkWell Beverages. 'Full strength' implied the drink should be preferred for its alcohol content. A '70–80% less carbohydrates and calories' claim was a nutrition claim not allowed for alcohol.
Keep copy product-first: the wine, the grape, the producer, the food it suits. This is a summary, not legal advice.
Set up automations first, then measure the right numbers
Klaviyo's 2026 benchmarks, from more than 183,000 brands, show food and beverage campaigns at a 31.2% open rate, 1.7% click rate and 0.26% placed-order rate. Automated flows in the sector reach 33% opens and 5.8% clicks.
Across all brands, flows produced about 41% of email revenue from 5.3% of sends. Build abandoned-basket and gift-reminder flows in October, not in the December rush.
Don't trust open rates. Apple Mail Privacy Protection inflates them: Brevo's 2026 average is 20.73%, rising to 33.87% when Apple opens are counted. Judge Christmas on clicks, orders and revenue.

What to do on Monday
Get your courier's 2026 cut-off in writing. Put it in the calendar and count back.
Then do three things this week: clean the list, build two flows, and write the Black Friday offer with its conditions in the email.
Ziild CMO drafts, checks and schedules newsletters like these from one chat, with a human yes before every send; it currently sends to 80,000 readers per newsletter for a Nordic wine and food importer. If that is useful, book 15 minutes at https://ziild.co.uk/book.
Questions people ask
When should a UK wine merchant send the last Christmas order email?
Before your own courier's last delivery cut-off. Royal Mail's 2026 dates run from 18 December for 2nd Class to 23 December for Special Delivery Guaranteed, but most merchants use couriers, so check yours.
Can I email past customers about Christmas offers without fresh consent?
Under the PECR soft opt-in, yes, if they bought from you, gave you their details, did not opt out, and you offered a clear opt-out at collection and in every message. It does not cover prospects or bought-in lists. This is a summary, not legal advice.
Do the CAP Code alcohol rules apply to emails?
Yes. Section 18 covers non-broadcast marketing, including email. The ASA upheld a complaint about Wine52 welcome and referral emails in December 2024.
What is a good open rate for wine email marketing?
Klaviyo's 2026 food and beverage campaign average is 31.2%, but Apple Mail Privacy Protection inflates opens. Click rate (1.7% for campaigns) and orders are better measures.
How big are PECR fines now?
Since 5 February 2026 the ICO can fine up to £17.5m or 4% of global turnover for PECR breaches, up from £500,000.
